Preview: Malayalam Movie Cassanova

Hi All.....Here comes the most awaited news of the decade. Cassanova to start the shoot @ Goa on 24th. The shooting will be done in Kochi,Bangalore,Dubai,Bangkok,Vienna and Capetown. 85 days are currently calculated to complete the shoot. Idavela Babu is the proj prod controller. All the pre-production works over and it took almost 15 months to get complete. Every one was against the proj including the medias and producers. But Rosshan and his crew overcome every thing n finally the movie s gonna start.
Rosshan's words :"I am really blessed to have a hero like Lalettan. Whenever i announced this proj, i donno why almost all were against this proj including a high profile star in the Malayalam film industry. He may be against the proj becoz he dreams that he could do that role. But according to me and Bobby-Sanjay,no other actor except Lalettan can do this. Against all odds, Lalettan was with us as a brother, companion, friend and every thing. Without him, we could not have start this proj. We thought that once the confident group would have been opted out from this one. But they have the faith in me n Lalettan. This is my dream proj. My soul, my life. I will give my blood and heart to make this proj thge most beautifuk movie ever made in Malayalam."

These words were told by Rosshan to all his crew 2 days before and he announced thw date and all the actors shooting locales, everything to them.(My cousin is working as Assist Dir)

Coming to the film: This movie is sure gonna be the most beautiful made film with highly stylished n profiled actors n shooting locales. A hollywood stunt master has been roped(Sorry i forget his name.My cousin told me)n we will see one of the amazing stunt sequences ever made in Indian cinema.
All the action sequences will be shoot @ Capetown in and around the buildings and mountains.Mountain climbing,Building to building jumps, car chase n the most amazing fight steps are the highlights of the movie. Around 18 fight sequences are there in the movie. Don't mistake the movie as an action thriller. Cassanova will be the most romantic movie ever done by Lalettan.
Right now, Rosshan and others are working on Lalettan's look in the film. One more interesting news s that Lalettan will be having around 6 different get-ups in the movie. All the get-ups will be different in looks and the most romantic will be his get-ups @ Capetown. One of his looks will be like the one he appeared during the launch of the movie.
Coming to the charaters.
Jagathy as Luca : A man who speaks more than 12 languages settled at Capetown. Cassanova's bussiness partner as well as the right hand. Along with Lalettan,Jagathy will have a full length role. Jagathy's words: " After Moonam Pakkam,i did not get any charatcer which was there to perform and close to my heart. I always believe that whenever i am acting with Lal, i am not acting. I am living with him. Pappettan used to tell me that he will cast me in a different character in his movie along with Lal. But his words still remains as if. I believe that after Papeetan only Blessy and Rosshan are the directors who came with a real creative mind and ideas. Both of them have clear picture on the movie they r going to do. My character in this movie "Luca" will be the one i have dreamt of doing for many years. It is not a comedy but it has comedy which i feel the audiences will die thru laughing. It is not a sentimental, but i believe that Audiences will cry once they came out of the theatre."
Hope Lalettan will become slim for this proj. Bcoz if he is slim only, Lalettan's get-ups will become perfect as sketched by Rosshan n others.

That high profile actor: I also don't know exactly. But according to many, he is one of the most high profile star in Malayalam. Almost all the lead actors like Dillep, Jayaram, Suresh Gopi are having probs with him. In 20-20 SG was initially opted out due to the presence of this actor. But Becoz of Lalettan only SG came n acted. Once in an interview SG told that 20-20 was the only film he acted without any interest. Bcoz of Joshy n Lalettan only he acted int hat one. Dileep n Jayaram are also having probs with him. Jayaram's role was supposed to be some more lenghty and he was ther till the climax. But that actor put some pressure on the writers and trimmed his role. He has given no importance at the climax of the movie.

I won't tell the name of that person since i don't have any proof with me. But i am really amused after hearing all this things. I am sure that it was not Thilakan.
Coming bak to the movie:
Lalu Alex as Zachariah: As per report after Ividom Swargamnu He will be in a never seen before role as Villian.

Lalu Alex is one of the most under rated actor in Malayalam. But he is gonna rock in this movie in a never seen before role as Villain.
According to him: "I am really thrilled to be a part of this highly stylished film. My costumes in this movie are one of the most costliest ones i ever used. My character is the most challenging one i ever acted. I am sure that Zacharia will bring fear to all your minds. He will be hated by all the Malayalees. But after the movie, i am sure that all the audiences will bring a tear for Zachariah and the moment he reveals a secret is gonna be the highlight of this movie. Zachariah the villian will be the most loved villain character in Malayalam."
Sameera as Mona : A model from Goa and Cassanova's lover. A tweet from Sameera to me states that "she is thrilled with the movie and is very lucky to be part of this film especially as the main female lead along with Lalettan".

In this movie, Sameera will be seen as Miss GOA and the character who is ready to die for Cassanova to get his love. But fate had some other thngs to do on them.

According to Sameera: "After Kaalpurush, i think this is the character that i was looking to do. Before doing Cassanova i need a perfect launch in Malayalam and i got it with Oru Naal Varum. I will be the most luckiest actress who will have 2 mega hits with Lalettan in same year and i am sure that both the movies are going to make history. I want to act again with Lalettan but only in meaningful roles. I won;t do any crap movie with Lalettan becoz he is such an amazing person. I don't want to put any harm on his name by committing to a false proj and i am sure that all his fans will blame me if i act with him in any crap movies. I am looking forward for another movie with Lalettan n Roshan sir soon."

Alexander The Great Review

Synopsis - Prathapa Varma (Saikumar) leaves all his property in the name of his stepson Alexander Varma (Mohanlal).Manu (Bala),his other son tries to attain his signature in order to get the legal power over the property.

Script - Inspired from Dustin Hoffman-Tom Cruise starrer "The Rainman",this film deals with a person who has a high IQ level n thus looks abnormal in the eyes of others because of his attitude towards life. This is what the scriptwriter has done to Hoffman's character who suffers from Autism in the original.Almost the first portion reminds you of The Rainman. But the scriptwriter was able to adapt it to Malayalam very well along with the director. If you take this movie as an entertainer or time-pass,then you won't have to blame the screenplay since it provides entertainment throughout. But if you start to be a a bit microscopic, then you might find the development of script is not seen much. But for me,its quite s decent job done by a not so known writer,P Balachandran. What makes this predictable film is the way scenes are ordered, quite unpredictable actually.Plus U mite feel, the makers have glorified Mohanlal's Alexander a bit too much, showing his skills n predictions turning true etc.but nowadays U see worse than these.

Direction - Murali Nagavally has done just a fine job.At times,he seems to be out of touch n amateurish. At times,he got a good grip over the film.I felt like he was waiting Mohanlal to be introduced in this film (which wasn't a great one actually),so that half of the load maybe put onto his head.Because, the movie starts to look different in a positive manner after the entry of Lal.But its quite a relief that he didn't make any attempt to glorify Mohanlal the star.

Cast & Performance - Mohanlal was too good as usual.A person who did Thanmathra won't find this role challenging,But what he was able to convey consistently was the "innocence" required by the character.Bala was OK.He has loads of room to improve, but his best character in Malayalam till now.Sudhachandran was relief n looked fresh while comparing to KPAC,Kavyoor,Sukumari etc.But the person who dubbed for her was a bit irritating.Sidhiqque has to do another HALLO with full hair.Nedumudi,Ganesh etc were good.Jagadeesh was again inconsistent.Meenaxi as Bala's lover didn't have much to do n was below average.

Music & Background Score - Etho Oru Vaakil...stands out.M G Sreekumar has done a great job as a music director n singer.A perfect song to start the film.Rest all were below average. The Background Score was at times a bit loud.
Production Value - The producer seems to have no probs in spending money. He n Director has chosen Dubai,Mumbai etc to give a slick look to this film.I believe its a good move,or else the film would have looked bad.

Technical Expertise - Cinematography was good.I personally didn't like Mohanlal's getup, even if its meant to show Lal as an innocent guy.Editing was fine.

Overall.....A movie which should have been released during Vishu.A Feel Good Entertainer.U won't see much gimmicks or punchlines in this movie (if tats wat u r expecting in an entertainer)...So 7/10[/]as an entertainer

P:S - The film would surely done better business if released during Vishu. Now with ONV releasing next week n bad pre publicity,it might affect the film.

Sanjay Dutt in Malayalam

It's interesting. Following the other starwalts of Bollywood Sanjay Dutt is also showing interest to be in Malayalam. The news is that he has already agreed to become a part of the new movie to be produced by U Pradeep. The director of the movie is not yet fixed, but the producer makes its clear that it is sure to happen this year.

The year will also witness a number of Bollywood stars in Malayalam including Amitabh Bachchan, Sunil Shetty, Dimple Kapadia and Manisha Koirala.

‘Pokkiri Raja’ is instant hit

As expected and predicted by the trade, The Mammootty-Prithviraj starrer ‘Pokkiri Raja’ has managed to open with hundred percent initials. The first day viewers were particularity happy with the way the movie has handled the stardom of these two actors.

The movie, though with a regular thread, is expected to bag in the capita, spent on it in another three weeks. While the other two releases, ‘Alexander The Great’ and ‘Katha Thudarum’ has also met with good word of mouth, the lack of publicity seems to have affected the prospects of the former. The Lal film may manage to bring in audience, if it increases the publicity measures in the coming weeks.

'Katha Thudarum'- the Sathyan film is sure to win the hearts of the family audience in the long run, with its effective mix of melodrama and family sentiments.

T D Dasan Standard VI B Movie Review

For all those film festival buffs who had been the ardent fans of the Iranian films, that narrated simple emotional stories with children, this one is indeed a treat. Debutant director Mohan Raghavan has created an unusual Mollywood movie exactly in the same league of festival winners, with his debut film 'T D Dasan, Standard VI B'.

The movie has debutant Alexander as T D Dasan, who lives with his mother Chandrika (Shwetha Menon) in a sleepy village near Chittur in Palakkad. Chandrika who is deserted by her husband Diwakaran long back, works in a local matchstick factory and is struggling to get both ends meet. One day, while searching for something in his mother's trunk box, Dasan gets an address of his dad who walked out of their house when he was a year old. Dasan immediately writes one letter to this address explaining all his woes and pains for not being with his father. The letter reaches Keystone Villa to where it was addressed and where Dasan's father Diwakaran was working as a driver.

But as of now, the house is inhabited by an ad filmmaker named Nandan (Biju Menon), who lives there with his only daughter Ammu (Teena Rose), a little prodigy and a short story writer. She gets affected by the innocence of Dasan's lines and starts writing replies to Dasan, as if they were written by his dad. The reply to Dasan comes to him as every sort of blessing, an only chance of reconnecting to his father .But very soon the myths, surrounding the village and coincidences were to take his story to a different turn.

The soft social commentary that runs all along, addressing the anti-coal war to the social forestry promotions that never take a preachy tone, is the highlight of the movie. The marvellous direction coupled with sensitive writing makes Mohan Raghavan, the most impressive debut in recent times. The director gloriously continues his experiments with narratives allowing the ad maker Nandhan to think wild around the frame of the letter addressed to a long gone father.

His attempts on finding its possible later half, for a feature film is constructed inside the narratives in a charming way, never dissuading any interests from the original story. The movie upholds the belief on human values and at the same time gives the multi layered diverse viewpoints of village and town, reality, myths and fiction, and that of children and grownups.

The movie which is definitely a brilliant outcome, is supported by everyone from its lead cast of children, who are spontaneous in their acting .Others including Biju Menon, Vatsala Menon and Shwetha menon plays their parts to true extremes.

The only song by Sreevatsan J Menon is another great piece of work, after his songs for ‘Laptop’. Sreevatsan's BG scores are also a treat to hear. The camera work by Arun Varma and editing by Vinod Sukumaran also needs special mention. So is the art work by Sunil Kochanoor and costumes by Rasak Thirur.

At the same time, It is also of great regret to say that the reviewer was only able to watch the movie in his third attempt, the first two becoming unsuccessful due to the need of a minimum audience to run the show in the release centers .If this is the fate of sensible, brilliant Mollywood movies in Box Office, we are damn sure that no kind of producer agitations or financial regulatory measures are going to help the industry from a possible destruction.

The connoisseurs of good cinema, it is high time for you to stand up and parade inside theatres to help such honest sensitive ventures that are going to be the worthy mascots of our industry, everywhere.

Verdict : Good

Alexander The Great -- Review

Kadha Thudarunnu-- Review

Director
Sathyan Anthikkad
Music
Ilaiyaraja
Cast
Jayaram, Mamta Mohandas, Asif Ali

Director Sathyan Anthikkad treads through his usual path of family saga with a mix of melodrama, clichéd lines and all the ingredients in the formula, yet again.

That's the first thing which comes to your mind as you watch his latest film,Kadha Thudarunnu. Yes, there is an okay storyline here and the film has its moments for sure, but the problem is the old-fashioned way it has been packaged.

Shanavas Ahmad (Asif Ali), a key board player and Vidyalakshmi (Mamta Mohandas) marries against the wishes of their families. They are left on their own and a song later, they have a cute little daughter. Tragedy strikes soon, when some goonda gangs kill Shanavas by mistake and Vidya has virtually no where to go from then on.

Some dramatic turnarounds happens and she meets a virtuous auto-driver Preman (Jayaram), who takes her to his modest colony. Quite a few interesting characters played by KPAC Lalitha, Innocent, Mamukoya, Lakshmipriya, Chembil Asokan and so on takes the story ahead for a while. Now, Vidya soon becomes a part of their lives and they change her life as well.

Now, if you are not looking forward to some experiments, love watching those mushy tearjerkers on TV and your concept is somewhere on the lines of those Sooraj Barjatya kind of films where the lead characters all come in an often unbelievable shades of white, chances are that you can find this one fine enough. Perhaps Sathyan too is not there to prove a point and is happy repeating his trademark style as well!

There are some touching situations in the film but then, the storyline itself moves ahead in a rather predictable way. However, it is to the credit of the director that he has narrated a story from the point of view of a woman, which is a rarity during these times.

Mamta Mohandas has a challenging role at her hands and she handles it pretty fine as well. Jayaram has nothing much to do, but the film gets out of its sluggish pace only after his character arrives almost close to the first half.

Asif Ali gets a good platform but his chemistry with Mamta is rather disappointing on screen. Baby Anikha, who plays Vidyalakshmi's daughter, looks cute. The supporting characters look perhaps like those stereotyped ones in any story of this nature. Venu's camera is fine and Ilaiyaraja's tunes are quite good.

It is meant for those easily-moved, over-sentimental sorts who are not at the theatres to bother too much about its script or style. It's not in the league of the director's own Bhagyadevatha, which came out last year, and suffers when he tries a bit too hard to make it unbelievably idealistic at times. Fine, may be, but could have been better!

Verdict: Average

I can’t ask for more: Shriya Saran

Shriya Saran has been globetrotting for the last one month.

She was in London to shoot a song with Arya for her upcoming film Chikku Bukku and later in Switzerland with Ravi Teja for the shooting of her Telugu film Don Seenu.

Remember that Shriya is doing a full fledged Telugu film as heroine after five years . Meanwhile during the recent crisis when volcanic ash clouds disrupted flights in UK and Europe, Shriya was stuck in London.

The actress who had to be in Switzerland for the Telugu films shoot took a euro train from London to Interlaken which took 14 hours. But she is not complaining. Says Shriya: “I loved the experience though it was hectic”.

Now Shriya is in Mumbai for an ad shoot and is going back to the Swiss Alps as she has one more song to complete.

Shriya signs off by saying: “The best news that I got on reaching Mumbai is that my first Malayalam film Pokkiri Raja with Mammootty and Pritviraj has taken the biggest ever day one opening in recent times, when it released on May 7. I can’t ask God for anything better.”

Pokkiri Raja -- Review

Director
Vysakh
Music
Jassie Gift
Cast
Mammootty, Prithviraj, Shriya Saran

If anyone had doubts about why virtually every movie buff in Malayalam laments about the levels to which the films here have stooped, watch Pokkiri Raja. With no storyline worth mentioning, this one is just meant for the gallery, or more specifically, for the fans of Mammootty and Prithviraj. Their repeated close-ups, heroics, dialogues and the gimmickry remind some of those yesteryear Tamil masala movies at best!

As it is a custom in most of the movies of the genre in Malayalam these days, this film also begins with some flashback sequences, when the heroes were young and gets involved in certain scuffles with a rival gang. The elder one, Raja (Mammootty), moves to Madurai and becomes a don there. He sports a walrus moustache, speaks in broken English meant to evoke laughs and travels in a swanky BMW, religiously followed by more than a dozen Innova cars.

Before Raja makes his entry, almost the entire first half is focused on his younger brother Surya (Prithviraj) and his escapades. Both the men can beat any number of thugs to a pulp, sing, dance or mouth sensational dialogues. Soon, Raja comes on time when Surya is in trouble, the song-dance-dialogues-fight cycle repeats.

It is a rather poor hotchpotch of sequences from Rajamanikyam, Annan Thampi, Puthiya Mugham, Boeing Boeing (Salim Kumar trying to ape Jagathy's funny act with less finesse) and from several other films. Of course, there is no problem in having films which are just meant to entertain the viewers and the kind that ask them to leave their brains back home. But then, such films should have at least a half decent storyline and some nice moments. No such luck here!

What the film succeeds in the end is providing some fantastic visuals while the heroes make their appearance and both have been presented in super style. Mammootty and Prithviraj look handsome in their own way and the scenarist duo of Siby K Thomas and Udayakrishna have succeeded in allotting almost equal footage to them. Vysakh has done his bit to give style to every frame, with the heroes in it. But at around two hours and forty five minutes the film is tad too lengthy, especially for a loud one like this.

Shriya Saran plays Prithviraj's pair in the film and she has nothing much to do other than to look pretty. Siddique and Riyas Khan play the baddies, though they look like mere caricatures, at the hands of the heroes. Suraj Venjarammood and Salim Kumar try their best to tickle the funny bones with their usual buffoonery, but generally fall flat. Shaji's visuals look good and Jassie Gift's compositions suit the mood.

It's true that the viewers look forward just to have some entertaining moments and some spectacular visuals and are prepared to let logic take a backseat. But the question is, why can't its makers try to come up with a genuine script when they have two of Malayalam's highly saleable heroes with them, in a rare casting-coup?

Verdict: Mass Masala

Mummy And Me -- Preview

After a small gap from her last movie 'Bharya Swantham Suhurthu', versatile actor Urvashi is back with the new movie 'Mummy And Me' directed by Jithu Joseph after her well applauded debut in 'Detective'.

The movie is also the second one from Archana Kavi, who made a famous debut last year with M T Lal Jose team's 'Neelathamara'. While Archana appears as the daughter in the movie, Urvashi is her mother. And as you surmise, the movie is all about this nuclear family consisting of a mummy and daughter and their dad, who loves each other a little bit more and are more engaged in each other's activities.

rchana Kavi is Jewel in the movie, the only daughter of Joseph (Mukesh) and Clara (Urvashi), who according to everyone in their neighborhood, is leading an ideal life. Jewel is bubbly new age girl with open, positive relations and friends. But Clara is a conventional mother who is always in the lookout to find fault with her daughter and to correct her in every petty issue. And this leads to complaints and worries, back to back which is killing the peace of the small, ideal family.

Meanwhile, Jewel falls in love with Rahul (Kunchacko Boban) her senior in the college and longtime friend. Rahul is also a single child much adored by his parents Thomachan (Lalu Alex) and Mary (Shari). This new relations is a new start for fights in Jewel's home between her and her mother. Attempting a story about generation gap, ‘Mummy And Me’, scripted by Jithu Joseph takes a careful look into the new age homes with single children, where intense caring and possessiveness leads to least expressions of love. Anoop Menon, Sudheesh, Janardhanan, Jeevan and Arun also appear in key roles of' Mummy and Me' while Suresh Gopi is also expected to appear in a surprising cameo in the movie.

'Mummy And Me' introduces a new music director Sejo John and a lyricist Shelton Pinero to Mollywood. While Vipin Mohan cranks the camera, V Saajan does the editing. S B Satheesh handles the costume department of the youth flick which offers a lot of chances to introduce trendy costumes, while Sabu ram is in charge of Art.

The movie expected to be in theatres this May, is being produced by Joy Thomas Sakthikulangara under the banner of Jithin Arts, who had earlier made the super hit movie 'Hello'. ‘Mummy and Me’ is distributed by Max Lab.

Suresh Gopi back to police

Suresh Gopi and police uniforms are like hands and glows. The best suited role for Suresh Gopi, has been repeated by the actor umpteenth number of times in movies, probably two to three times every year. This time Suresh Gopi will be in the uniform for another stylish director Dr Janardhanan, the maker of many stylish detective tele-serials. He had earlier landed into filmdom with the movie 'Mahasamudram' featuring Mohanlal. Let's wait and see what differences will Janardhanan who is also the writer of his movies, have to offer to Suresh Gopi's character in the police uniform.

It will be of much curiousness to note that two films 'Ringtone’ and ‘Kanyakumari Express’, which are yet to be released will also, have the star in the same role.

Pappi Appacha is a Super Hit!

Dileep is back with a bang! His Pappi Appacha is turning out to be the biggest hit of summer of 2010. The star has made a fantastic comeback to mainstream commercial cinema.

Anoop, Dileep’s brother has produced and distributed Pappi Appacha, directed by Mamas with Innocent and Dileep playing father and son, along with Kavya Madhavan doing the female lead. The film was scathed by critics and industry people as “crass and crude comedy”, but the common man seems to like this masala entertainer.

But Dileep’s lucky streak started after he did “pooja” at Guruvayoor temple before the release of the film. And the ongoing fight between distributors and theatres resulted in no new releases for the last three Fridays. This helped Pappi Appacha as there was no opposition and the summer special family audiences lapped it up, making the film a super hit.

The trade feels if Pokkiri Raja and Alexander the Great had released, the Dileep comedy would not have been such a big hit. Plus the fact Lal directedIn Ghost House Inn, collections started dropping after a fantastic opening.

The film has taken a distributors share of Rs 2.82 crore from 73 releasing stations in 23 days (up to May 5). Says Anoop: “It is my biggest hit till date. The film has been made at a cost of Rs 3.5 Crore and it looks like it will make around Rs 4 to 4.5 crore from theatrical collections alone.”

Remember there are other revenue streams like television and Home Video rights which will fetch the producers another Rs 2 crore. In short Pappi Appacha, has given Dileep a new lease of life at the box-office.
