Mammootty is giving breaks to a lot of new directors “who have ideas that can make a hit”. His new director is Martin Prakkat, fashion photographer who does great portfolios for the leading women magazine ‘Vanitha’. During one of his journalistic assignments he met Mammootty and struck a friendship with the actor which led to him becoming director of a Mammootty film. ‘Pokkiri Raja’ is instant hit
As expected and predicted by the trade, The Mammootty-Prithviraj starrer ‘Pokkiri Raja’ has managed to open with hundred percent initials. The first day viewers were particularity happy with the way the movie has handled the stardom of these two actors. The movie, though with a regular thread, is expected to bag in the capita, spent on it in another three weeks. While the other two releases, ‘Alexander The Great’ and ‘Katha Thudarum’ has also met with good word of mouth, the lack of publicity seems to have affected the prospects of the former. The Lal film may manage to bring in audience, if it increases the publicity measures in the coming weeks. 'Katha Thudarum'- the Sathyan film is sure to win the hearts of the family audience in the long run, with its effective mix of melodrama and family sentiments.

Pokkiri Raja -- Review
Mammootty, Prithviraj, Shriya Saran
As it is a custom in most of the movies of the genre in Malayalam these days, this film also begins with some flashback sequences, when the heroes were young and gets involved in certain scuffles with a rival gang. The elder one, Raja (Mammootty), moves to Madurai and becomes a don there. He sports a walrus moustache, speaks in broken English meant to evoke laughs and travels in a swanky BMW, religiously followed by more than a dozen Innova cars.
Before Raja makes his entry, almost the entire first half is focused on his younger brother Surya (Prithviraj) and his escapades. Both the men can beat any number of thugs to a pulp, sing, dance or mouth sensational dialogues. Soon, Raja comes on time when Surya is in trouble, the song-dance-dialogues-fight cycle repeats.
It is a rather poor hotchpotch of sequences from Rajamanikyam, Annan Thampi, Puthiya Mugham, Boeing Boeing (Salim Kumar trying to ape Jagathy's funny act with less finesse) and from several other films. Of course, there is no problem in having films which are just meant to entertain the viewers and the kind that ask them to leave their brains back home. But then, such films should have at least a half decent storyline and some nice moments. No such luck here!
What the film succeeds in the end is providing some fantastic visuals while the heroes make their appearance and both have been presented in super style. Mammootty and Prithviraj look handsome in their own way and the scenarist duo of Siby K Thomas and Udayakrishna have succeeded in allotting almost equal footage to them. Vysakh has done his bit to give style to every frame, with the heroes in it. But at around two hours and forty five minutes the film is tad too lengthy, especially for a loud one like this.
Shriya Saran plays Prithviraj's pair in the film and she has nothing much to do other than to look pretty. Siddique and Riyas Khan play the baddies, though they look like mere caricatures, at the hands of the heroes. Suraj Venjarammood and Salim Kumar try their best to tickle the funny bones with their usual buffoonery, but generally fall flat. Shaji's visuals look good and Jassie Gift's compositions suit the mood.
It's true that the viewers look forward just to have some entertaining moments and some spectacular visuals and are prepared to let logic take a backseat. But the question is, why can't its makers try to come up with a genuine script when they have two of Malayalam's highly saleable heroes with them, in a rare casting-coup?
Verdict: Mass Masala

Big Friday in Mollywood - May 7
Today (May 7), is going to be the biggest Friday in the history of modern Malayalam cinema! For the first time in many, many years, there is going to be a direct conflict between Mammootty and Mohanlal. On the same day the ‘numero uno’ director Sathyan Anthikad’s new Jayaram film is also releasing. The Kerala audiences have never been so spoiled with choice of movies. The ban on the release of new Malayalam films has been lifted, after a “temporary truce” has been arrived upon by the feuding distributors and exhibitors. It means the Mammooty-Prithviraj Pokkiri Raja, Mohanlal’s Alexander the Great and Sathyan Anthikad’s Katha Thudarum are releasing simultaneously today (May 7), all over Kerala. Mathilukalkkappuram: Vidya Balan is Mammootty's pair
Vidya will be first seen in Malayalam with the film, Mathilukalkkappuram.
It is not a new affair for Bollywood ladies to appear in southern screens. North stars were seen in South Indian films when they get aged or they loose popularity. But this is not the case with Vidya Balan. She is young and sought after in Hindi. This will be her first venture after her performance in Ishqiya.
Mathilukalkkappuram will be directed by Prasad who had compleated the script a couple of years back. The film will continue with Vaikom Muhammad Basheer's story. Noted director Adoor Gopalakrishnan made Mathilukal in 1989.
The story will take off from where Adoor finished.
Ravi K Chandran directs the camera while the sound department will be headed by Resul Pookutty. Mammootty's production company, Playhouse, will produce the film.
Vidya Balan is not considered a typical Bollywood heroine who shows skin and goes the dance and gym routine. She is known for her beauty and acting performance. Her stuff can be sampled in films like Parineeta, Munna Bhai MBBS, Paa and the recent Ishqiya. Vidya was born in Palakkad, Kerala, in a south Indian Brahminical family.

Mammootty new look-walrus moustache!
Mammootty has a new deadly new look in debutant Vysakh’s Pokkiri Raja! For the first time the actor is spotting a handlebar walrus moustache known in local lingo as “Pandi Kapada Meesa”. The Walrus moustache worn by Kamal Hassan in Thevar Magan became famous all over Tamil Nadu at that time, and even now top actors love wearing it. Take a look at Tamil actor Ajith’s latest film Aasal and Suriya’s yet to be released Singam. So can Mammootty be far behind? In Tamil Nadu this type of moustache indicates a macho tough look. In the film Pokkiri Raja Mammootty’s plays Raja son of a disciplined school master, who ran away from home and becomes a powerful local dada in Madurai. His younger brother Surya played Prithviraj too follows him and becomes another dada!
